How to Register for the Spanish Social Security System

It is a must to be registered under the Spanish social security system when you are working or looking for employment in Spain. To do so you need to apply for the so called Numero de Afiliación. You only have to apply once and the number is good for life. Employers will then use this number to register you in the social security system so that you can receive benefits and are legally allowed to work in Spain.

Applying for Your Affiliation Number

Both EU and Non-EU citizens will need to fill out the TA-1 form and prepare at least 2 copies of the following documents:

  • ID or Passport
  • Employment contract and housing contract (if available)
  • NIE (if available)
  • Residency and visa papers (Non-EU citizens only)

You will bring all the completed items to the nearest Tesorería de la Seguridad Social office. It is still not common nowadays for the workers to not speak English at the office so be prepared to know the necessary Spanish phrases to get through the process. The hours are usually Monday-Friday from 9:00-14:00. The line can be very long so arrive early!

Careful – You need to apply for the Numero de Afiliación first. With this number, your company then registers you, the employee, into the social security system.
